Choosing the Right Surgeon for Cataract Surgery: Why the National Ophthalmology Database Matters

If you’re considering cataract surgery, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is who performs your operation. Cataract surgery is very safe overall, but like any procedure, there are risks. What many people don’t realise is that not all surgeons have the same complication rates.

That’s why the National Ophthalmology Database (NOD) is so valuable. Run by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the NOD collects results from cataract operations across the UK and makes them publicly available. It allows patients like you to see how surgeons are performing and to make an informed choice.

What does the NOD actually measure?

Two of the key safety measures are:

Posterior Capsule Rupture (PCR):

The most common complication in cataract surgery. The NOD shows the percentage of operations completed without PCR — the higher the number, the safer the results.

Avoidance of Vision Loss:

Cataract surgery should almost always improve sight. The NOD shows how often patients avoid losing vision after surgery — again, a higher percentage means safer outcomes.

Why experience matters: high surgical numbers

Another key factor in achieving excellent results is how many cataract operations a surgeon performs each year.

Surgeons who carry out large numbers of operations gain a higher level of precision, confidence, and familiarity with rare complications.

Research has shown that a higher surgical volume is linked to better outcomes and lower complication rates.

For patients, this means a smoother experience, greater safety, and more consistent results.

As a surgeon who performs a high volume of cataract operations every year, I combine both experience and skill with audited, transparent results.

My results on the National Ophthalmology Database

I believe in complete transparency, which is why my results are publicly available on the NOD.

My PCR rates are exceptionally low, significantly better than the national average.

Almost all of my patients avoid any vision loss, reflecting the highest standards of safety.

My high annual surgical numbers mean that patients benefit from both technical skill and extensive hands-on experience.

These outcomes show the level of precision and care I bring to every cataract operation. For you, it means greater reassurance, lower risk, and better visual results.

Why this matters when choosing your surgeon

The NOD gives you the facts, not just opinions. By checking a surgeon’s results, you can:

Feel confident you’re in safe hands

Choose a surgeon with a proven track record

Benefit from the expertise of a surgeon who performs cataract surgery at scale

Know your care is backed by independent, audited outcomes

When it comes to your vision, you deserve the best possible care.
